Can I be blunt here? Just to save a lot of time? No-one is going to steal your story idea. Generally speaking, people who think<\/em> others are going to steal their idea, well they tend to be early-days, novice writers (if you catch my drift). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writers fear many things of course \u2026 but they\nare normally things like running out of coffee, \nendless rejection, fear of being misunderstood, fear that the changes\nyou spent all day doing were suddenly lost in a freak technical glitch – or\nrunning out of coffee – and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a fellow writer myself, I know your idea\nwill be very important to you. Something you have nurtured, nourished,\nprotected with lioness-like claws and teeth – it\u2019s your baby after all – but in\nits present form your idea is not that important to anyone else. Your idea is\n(a) just an idea – a thought in your head and (b) it\u2019s yours \u2026 your voice, your\nthread, your concepts, your characters, your \u2018treatment\u2019, your point of view\nthat bring that idea to life.

\nEven if someone was \u2018inspired\u2019<\/em> by\nyour idea – they would mould the story in a very different fashion to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t copyright an idea – copyright\nonly covers \u2018original works of authorship\u2019. However, if you are worried by such\nthings, once you have committed your idea to paper, then you have the beginnings\nof a paper trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many newbie writers are scared to hand over\ntheir draft manuscript to others who have the expertise to provide advice and turn\nthose draft notes into a great story with arcs and hooks and a profound take-away\nmessage. My advice to you, if you are one of these writers – let it go \u2026 let it\ngo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest assured if you hand your work over to\na professional writer, ghostwriter, editor, proof reader, designer, publishing\nagent or anyone else in the whole world of publishing and word-related activities\n– they have their own file of their own ideas. They will have a bottom drawer\nfull of their own languishing manuscripts, their own desires, their own belief\nthat their manuscript is the next big thing. They certainly do not have the\ndesire or the inclination to steal your ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What they do have is a wealth of industry\nexperience. Writing is not called a \u2018craft\u2019 for nothing. Writers are constantly\nlearning, researching, studying, working endlessly to improve and convey and\ncommunicate their innermost thoughts and feelings. They have a wealth of\nknowledge about narrative arcs, plot arcs, rules of genre, rules that can be\nbroken, industry requirements, marketing, tone of voice, points of view,\ncharacter traits, orphans, widows and other such technicalities. And these\npeople are WILLING to share what they have learned over the years – just to see\nanother writer become an author – just to see a fellow human being achieve\ntheir writing ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you are one of those writers scared\nsomeone will pinch your idea, don\u2019t hold yourself back because of \u2018fear\u2019. Fear\nstifles creativity, it stifles action. Getting the right people involved in\nyour idea and subsequent manuscript will elevate your story – perhaps beyond\nyour immediate abilities, and certainly beyond your wildest dreams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Save your fears and energies for something else – as a writer, you won’t have your troubles to seek … lol. Sorry if that was tough love – but I promise it did come from a place of love. <\/p>\n
